Derrick Adams Exhibition: Patrick Kelly, The Journey
When Patrick Kelly died of HIV in 1990, at age 35, he was already the first American designer admitted by the Chambre Syndicale du prêt-à-porter.He reached that point in his own terms, referring to racial stereotypes, using cultural references of pop and promoting the diversity of models (including a model that toured his catwalk with eight months of pregnancy).'Women's design for all types of women,' he explained in 1987.'My message is: you are beautiful as you are'.The artist Derrick Adams has immersed himself in the Kelly file, which includes correspondence with Maya Angelou, photographs, sketches and fabric samples. The result is a series of collages and sculptural works that celebrate the daring geometry and the graphic colors of Kelly's designs, as well as their legacy.
