The recommendations of the designer and shoemaker Patricio Arévalo to clean, nourish and protect the different types of leather.

SUEDE

-Clean and nourish:

Being very sensitive to friction (which alters its texture and even its color), the application of colorless products in spray format is recommended, such as the cleaner and color renovator for nubuck and suede from Virginia ($2,790 in supermarkets), that removes stains, nourishes and matches the color. For the latter, you can also apply the steam from the kettle or kettle.

-Protect: to protect against water and stains, use the Kiwi brand waterproofing agent or one from the Color Shoes brand (at repair shop Jorge Zapatero, Av Providencia 2529, loc 7).

COOKED LEATHER

Typical of boots and some moccasins, this is a stiff leather that is given a cracked texture through a boiling technique.

-Clean: dust is its main enemy, since it adheres to its cracks. You have to dry clean with a few drops of soft gel ($ 4,190, Reparadora Alemana, Los Trapenses 3025, loc 15), with circular movements and a tooth or nail brush. For stains, use petroleum jelly or cooking oil, marigold or olive, with a lint-free cloth.

-Nourish: on dry leather apply a wax with a sponge

neutral for shoes or furniture or emulsified oil for buses with circular movements.

-Protect: keep in a dry place.

OILED LEATHER

Common in boots, it is worked with vegetable oils to make it flexible and waterproof.

More about protect

-Clean: it is more waterproof than cooked, but also more delicate. Soft gel can be applied with gauze or a sponge. To remove stains, Arévalo recommends applying beaten egg yolk to a dry cotton ball and then rinsing with a little warm water.

-Nourish: apply neutral wax and polish with a cloth. This keeps the leather supple and prevents it from becoming brittle.

-Protect: Arévalo recommends Kiwi-brand Leather Waterproofing Spray ($7,790 in Jumbo), which should be sprayed about 10 centimeters away from the shoes.

DYED LEATHER

All types of tanning can be dyed. Acrylic is used for solid and uniform colors, and aniline and vegetable dyes for translucent ones.

-Clean: dry clean with a brush or sponge with a few drops of cooking oil. Avoid chemical cleaners as they can discolor. To remove stains, use a cotton ball with a little beer, whose yeast loosens the adhering particles.

-Nourish: with a sponge and soft, circular movements, apply colorless neutral wax or the color of the leather.

-Protect: apply Kiwi leather waterproofing. Do not wet.

PATENT LEATHER

Waterproofed leather with one or several layers

polyurethane varnish, treatment that gives it shine.

-Clean: Apply Vaseline or a drop of cooking oil with a lint-free cloth.

-Nourish: with a sponge or gauze, apply a mixture of castor oil ($3,190 at Knop and Hahnemann pharmacies) and some cosmetic moisturizing milk. This will moisturize the leather and restore its shine.
