Palma de Mallorca, January 2022. The Iberostar Group has announced, within the framework of the Fitur 2022 fair, that all of its hotels in Spain will consume electricity from renewable energies with a guarantee of origin in 2022, a measure that will prevent the emission of more than 18,000 tons of CO2eq1 per year. This important step, which began to be implemented in most Spanish hotels in 2017, will culminate this year as part of the company's plan to achieve carbon neutrality in 2030, within its own Sustainable Agenda projected for this decade . Likewise, as part of this roadmap, the Iberostar Group begins the year with the plan to reduce by 2022 8% of its energy consumption in all its hotels, in line with the objective of reducing consumption by up to 35% by 2030 .
The Vice President and CEO of the Iberostar Group, Sabina Fluxá, highlighted that "thanks to our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 through a strong commitment to renewable energies, energy efficiency and electrification, the Iberostar Group is positioned as a leader in the energy transition in the tourism sector, with the aim of curbing the climate crisis and continuing to found a more responsible tourism”.
At the end of 2021, practically all the electricity consumption of the Iberostar hotels in Spain and its headquarters had certificates of renewable origin. It is expected that in 2022, the Iberostar Group will avoid sending more than 18,000 tons of CO2eq into the atmosphere thanks to this step of consuming 100% renewable energies only in Spain. All energy will have a guarantee of renewable origin, which certifies and guarantees that the electricity purchased by Iberostar comes from 100% renewable and sustainable sources. In the case of Iberostar, this comes from wind, hydraulic and, to a lesser extent, solar photovoltaic sources.
The commitment to be free of fossil fuels for Grupo Iberostar is irreversible, and the company's roadmap stipulates that these will be replaced entirely by renewable sources of energy. Clean energy is the only alternative for a sustainable energy supply for the Iberostar Group, which is why its commitment involves encouraging the use of renewable energy, supporting the development of technologies such as green hydrogen in Spain and inspiring the private sector to join to greater use of renewables. In this way, the hotel chain is helping to ensure that there are more and more renewable components in the Spanish and global energy network. On the other hand, these types of initiatives bring the company closer to its goal for 2030: to move towards the decarbonisation of the company and be emission-free.
