"Cruelty Free" products: these are the Chilean and foreign brands that do not test in animals

A few days ago, the Humane Society International organization (HSI) spread an animated short film that quickly went viral on social networks, called "Save Ralph", which told the story of a rabbit that "worked" in tests of cosmetics products for humans for humans.

The artistic piece is part of a campaign that seeks to end cosmetic tests in animals around the world. And although this practice is prohibited in 40 countries, it is still legal in much of the planet, including Chile.

“What I expected to achieve with this short film was to create something that deliver the message without being too strong.I hope the audiences fall in love with Ralph and want to fight for him and other animals like him, and so we can prohibit tests on animals once and for all, ”said Spencer Susser, director of the short film and initiative #saveralph.

Likewise, Jeffrey Flocken, president of Humane Society International, indicated that “Save Ralph is a call for attention that animals are still suffering from cosmetics, and it is time for us to join globally and prohibit it.Today we have a lot of reliable alternatives and without animal testing to guarantee product safety, so there is no excuse to make animals such as Ralph to try cosmetics or their ingredients ”.

In this sense, various animalist organizations such as Peta, Leaping Bunny and in the case of Chile the NGO TE Protected, have not only been responsible for raising their voice against animal testing, but also have dedicated themselves to applying certification programs for thebrands that do not, giving them a seal of "free cruelty", or cruelty free.

Animal test is justified?

As recorded a previous note from Biobiochile, animals tests date back to the twenties.According to the Cruelty Free Kitty specialized site, it was in 1938 when US law determined that every new drug should be tested in animals to guarantee its safety.

The above marked the precedent so that since then animals were subject to hard tests, in experimentation with new drugs, but they would also be used in the fields of the cosmetic industry, cleaning products, food additives, and also in the development of pesticides.

Today animal cruelty has prevailed, and public health, continues to be subterfuge through which, many governments continue to allow this practice, even when it is not justified.

But why isn't the animal test justified?Currently, companies can opt for thousands of safe ingredients, whose reliability was already proven and also the advances of the market and technology, leave the testing in animals as a totally obsolete and unnecessary practice in the beauty and cleanliness industry.

This is reaffirmed by Camila Cortínez, General Director of the ProtectTime to predict potential effects of these products on humans, which is why you can move away from trials in animals is not only an ethical strategy, but also a safer one for people, ”he said.

In fact, different studies have shown that animal toxicity tests are not significant because they are not precise, simply because humans and animals are genetically different.

Among the most used animals for these practices are rabbits, mice, hamsters and guinea pigs, which usually, because of pain and agony, die after the tests.Dogs, cats, and primates are also used, especially macaque, but also monkeys, babouins and chimpanzees.

When is a brand really "cruelty free"?
