“More than ten years ago, the item that received the least attention in a man's outfit was socks,” says Erasmo Montezuma, Saúl's image consultant. And he adds that, nowadays, the sock is a very important accessory that does not go unnoticed.
In many cases, by not thinking about this part of the outfit, you tend to choose socks that do not match or that do not contribute something to the personality of the person who wears them.
Although for many men this does not seem very relevant, in reality it is an accessory of the utmost importance; it is the "ideal complement to give an elegant, casual or sporty touch to your wardrobe," says Brenda Sanchinelli, an expert in public image.
So, how do we choose socks?
The first thing to take into account is personality, since clothing is a way to reflect it and to communicate with other people. According to Sanchinelli, in order to feel comfortable and confident in your outfit, you need to maintain the projection you want to convey.
Another aspect to consider is the occasion, says Renato González, Saúl's image consultant, since there are formal events, etiquette or even funerals, in which it is necessary to wear a traditional costume. The colors that González recommends for 'ceremonial' situations are ocher, blue, black and grey, to combine with the suit pants.
According to Sanchinelli, the norm for combining socks in traditional attire is “that the socks be the color of the shoe or the pants, because the idea is to go unnoticed”. And he explains that this marks elegance in clothing.
What if we break the rules?
For men with more daring personalities and who are governed by fashion, now there are more possibilities to choose this accessory that can be a plus in your outfit. These are characterized by being more colorful and with designs that include patterns, stripes, dots and stripes, among others.
Montezuma suggests that if you're looking to add a little bit of flair to your wardrobe, and are just starting to figure out how you can convey your personality through clothing, then the sock is a good fit for you.
For Sanchinelli, this type of socks is for men who can work in more creative and freer tasks, “where it is not required to project so much seriousness”. But it refers to an exception, Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, who usually stands out for wearing this accessory in a very striking way.
Another aspect that is out of the ordinary are the colors, since we can currently find very varied socks in palettes such as turquoise, yellow, green and red, among others.
“In the case of bright colors, they are for fashion-forward people, not conservatives, who dare to wear different types of clothing,” says González, adding that socks are an accessory to stand out.
You have to show them off
And now, the cuts of the pants are higher, so socks have become visible items in men's outfits and are an opportunity to add color to the locker room.
“The idea is to create an appreciation of colors in all the clothing, without it exploding in sight. It must be striking, but keeping a type of standardization in the color palette that is worn”, explains González.
And remember that, since this is a visible press, these must be neat; clean socks project that a person is careful with her personal hygiene. You should also wear them flat and not folded; Otherwise, you'll come across as sloppy.

According to Sanchinelli, there is a general rule to combine garments with patterns that can be dots, stripes and even some figures. "You can use plain socks and strong, loud colors such as orange, green and purple," says the expert.
Another rule is that, if the pants are plain and the shoes are discreet, you can wear socks with dots and patterns of combinations of three or four colors.
These tips can also be applied to other accessories like scarves or watches, explains Sanchinelli.
Combine the colors
To combine the clothes, González explains that the shoes must match the socks. "If the socks are blue or light blue, they go with dark blue shoes," he exemplifies. Another option that González gives is to wear red, purple or violet socks with corinto shoes. The key is to choose a specific color of the design and play with it.
Let it not be the focus of attention
It is worth remembering that socks are now a garment that is seen and shines, but it is also important to take into account the message we want to send.
Sanchinelli suggests that even if you wear colored socks, they don't totally steal the spotlight. "The more discreet the person in her dressing room is, the more she will be listened to for her ideas," says the expert.
According to this, González says that socks should be a complement to the outfit, but should not draw attention to the feet. “The set should feel like a whole; socks cannot be the focus of attention, everything has to be very harmonious”, he adds.
