We might believe that the errors when wearing boots are the same when using any shoe or footwear, however, this is not the case. Its different shape, in addition to the different types of styles, make it an independent shoe with its own rules of use.
Most of these boot mistakes that we will mention depend more on the rest of the clothes we wear them with and how we take care of them looking good and how an important part of the outfit. Avoiding these, and the mistakes when wearing shoes, we will not have problems.
Boots with a Suit
Boots are often seen as casual wear, particularly when it comes to cowboy styles, faded browns, or even Dr. Martens. They are perfect to wear with jeans or chinos, or another type of not-so-formal pants, however, with the traditional suit they do not look good, and they can completely ruin the outfit. They are even more forbidden for something like a tuxedo, so better wear shoes.
The alternative is loot, but you still have to be careful. Some oversized suits might look good with boots, but if you don't want to risk it, go classic and save the boots for other outfits, or make sure they have a similar feel to formal shoes if you want to wear them with a suit.

Don't consider proportion
The proportion between legs and feet is key in every outfit. In fact, square or triangular toed shoes are no longer recommended for this reason. Its shape made the foot look too big considering that formal pants are usually straight.
When we wear large shoes, it is recommended to wear slightly wide pants, because if we wear skinny, the foot will look too huge. Similarly, when wearing small, tight-fitting boots, it is best to opt for similar garments for the legs.
This is not completely general. There are some skinny outfits and Dr. Martens that look good, but the proportion is offset by tops like oversized coats or sweaters.
Not cleaning them (or not knowing how to clean them)
Terrible not cleaning boots or not polishing them. It is expendable as with any shoe (and even with white sneakers). If we want an impeccable look, it is advisable to clean them before or after each use. If you have questions about how to clean the different types of boots, you can use our GQ Guide to do it without problems (particularly when we talk about suede boots).
Do not consider the sole
Do you want comfortable boots with which you do not suffer after several hours of use? Will you walk enough? Perhaps the option is to buy them with rubber soles, which makes them more resistant, less mistreated and more comfortable when stepping on.
We already mentioned that they are not formal footwear so the rule of avoiding rubber does not apply and in this case it is better since the leather sole, besides that it can be more difficult to obtain (and in some cases more expensive) , it won't be as comfortable and can cause boots to wear out faster. It may be ideal for ankle boots on some semi-formal outfits, but for everything else, rubber is the go-to.
Using the wrong length of pants
If you want to show off your boots, it's not a good idea to wear clothes that are too big or a length that covers almost all the shoes. Ideally, the pants should barely cover the upper part of the boot, leaving a bit of the sock area visible, without letting it reach the ankle.
It's easy to fold the pants, but be careful about the length, since it can end up with a fold that looks too wide for the boot.
